Great variety of excellent educational resources of different technical complexity dedicated to the phenomenon of DDoS, are available on the Internet. However, while the "in depth" review of this subject, is beyond the scope of advanced hosting services, offered by DDoSWIZ.COM, here we would like to offer our visitors and webmasters beginners, a simplified description of what the DDoS attack is, and in addition, to explore the fact of it's seemingly paradoxical nature.
DDoS (short for Distributed Denial of Service), is an attack on a network, where multiple compromised computers (typically infected with computer virus) connected to the Internet, are used with intend to disrupt the functionality of a website and/or the web server, hosting such website. The "end result" of the "successful" DDoS attack, is when Internet users can no longer view the content of the website under attack. This happens either because of extremely slow loading of the website (resulting in "connection timeouts"), or even due to a complete (forced) shut down of the website server.
Why Paradox?
It is generally considered, that victims of DDoS attack consist of BOTH, the end targeted system (website's server) AND all of the computer systems, maliciously used and controlled by the attacker (hacker). However, it is important to note, that while the resulting malfunction of a website hosting server is apparent (targeted website is not loading), the owners of the attacking computer systems may not (and in most cases, DO NOT) know that their computers are being used for DDoS attacks. Thus the Paradox: The computers of Internet users, are used to prevent the very same Internet users from accessing websites.
The solving clue here is that NOT all computer systems can be used for the attack, but only those, which are not protected (those without genuine anti-virus/anti-malware software installed and regularly updated). Unprotected computer systems connected to the Internet, are a lot more prone to infections with computer viruses, such as Trojans, which are then used for manipulations by the attacker.
Zombie Analogy.
As mentioned above, the multitude of infected computer systems, is the component, necessary for the DDoS attack to take place. Very fine analogy among Internet experts is made, when the attacking end user computers, are referred to as "computer zombies". Here is why:
Per fictional horror stories (and some beliefs), zombies are reanimated corpses, raised from the dead by a bokor, or a powerful sorcerer. Zombies have no will of their own, therefore they are manipulated by the bokor, thus becoming his "workers" and enhance his "power". By the same token, the UNPROTECTED computers of unsuspecting Internet users, may become infected with the virus implanted by the hacker. The hacker (or the "know-how" attacker), just like a bokor capable of controlling zombies, can later connect to thousands of infected "zombie computer systems" via implanted virus and force them ALL to access targeted website, thus putting it down (if not DDoS protected).
DDoSWIZ.com - The "Wizards of DDoS".
Just as in all fictional horror stories, where the "good guys" always win at the end, the DDoSWIZ.COM is here to deliver the "wizardry" of DDoS protection in the form of “real life” hosting solution product. Let the dazzlingly skilled in DDoS protection to handle the "Dark Forces", so that you, the website owner, can concentrate on your business.
